Garage Sale Pricing Guide
Pricing is more art than science, and RGV shoppers expect garage sale prices, not thrift-store prices. Use these as starting points, not fixed rules — condition, brand, and how badly you want the item gone all move the number. For the full strategy on markdowns and bundling, see our pricing strategy post.
General starting points
| Category | Typical starting range |
|---|---|
| Kids' clothing (per piece) | $0.50 – $2 |
| Adult clothing (per piece) | $1 – $5 |
| Shoes (pair) | $2 – $8 |
| Books, DVDs, video games | $0.50 – $3 |
| Toys | $1 – $6, depending on size/condition |
| Small kitchen appliances | $3 – $12 |
| Lamps, small home decor | $2 – $10 |
| Hand tools | $1 – $8 each |
| Power tools (working) | $10 – $40 |
| Bikes (kids) | $10 – $25 |
| Bikes (adult) | $20 – $60 |
| Small furniture (side tables, chairs) | $5 – $25 |
| Large furniture (dressers, sofas) | $25 – $100+ |
| Electronics (TVs, monitors, working) | $15 – $60, condition-dependent |
These ranges reflect typical secondhand pricing norms and aren't drawn from McAllenGarageSales.com transaction data — we don't process payments or see final sale prices. Treat them as a sanity check, not a fixed price sheet.
How to adjust from the starting point
- Go higher for name brands in great condition, anything still sealed/unused, or items that regularly resell online for real money (name-brand tools, strollers, certain electronics).
- Go lower for anything with visible wear, missing parts, or outdated tech.
- Bundle low-value items ("fill a bag for $5") instead of pricing them individually — it moves volume and saves you from pricing forty $0.50 items one at a time.
- Leave room to negotiate. RGV garage sale shoppers expect to haggle a little; pricing 10–15% above your true minimum gives both sides room.
When something might be worth more than "garage sale money"
If you've got real antiques, vintage collectibles, or anything you suspect has resale value beyond typical secondhand pricing, slow down before you tag it at $2. Our guide to spotting valuable finds covers what to look for.
A Friendly Note on Sale Schedules
While McAllenGarageSales.com proudly uses official City of McAllen permit data to list sales, please remember that individual sellers manage their own operating hours. These hours might occasionally differ from the permitted times. We always recommend checking for any specific details or updates provided by the seller if possible.
