How Garage Sales Work in the RGV

If you're new to the area or new to garage saling in general, here's the quick orientation.

What makes a sale "permitted"

Every listing on McAllenGarageSales.com comes from a real permit the seller registered with the City of McAllen — see the permit guide. That's different from an informal, unregistered sale you might spot on a street corner. Permitted sales are legal, city-tracked, and the address is verified against real city records.

Garage sale vs. pulga (flea market)

They're not the same thing, and each is better for different shopping goals:

  • Garage sale — a single household clearing out their own belongings, usually for a weekend. Prices are lower, inventory is whatever that family happened to own, and it's first-come-first-served for the good stuff.
  • Pulga (flea market) — a permanent or recurring market with many vendors selling both new and used merchandise, open most weekends year-round. Better for browsing variety; garage sales are better for rock-bottom prices on used household items.

See our full flea markets vs. garage sales comparison, and our curated thrift & flea market directory for specific spots.

Cash norms

Garage sales run almost entirely on cash. Bring small bills — sellers often can't break a $50 for a $2 item early in the morning. Some sellers accept payment apps, but don't count on it; ask before you assume.

Basic etiquette

  • It's normal to ask "would you take …?" on unmarked or high-ticket items — see our negotiation guide.
  • Sales generally run only on their posted dates and hours — showing up outside those times (including "early bird" before the official start) is a judgment call the seller gets to make, not an entitlement.
  • Respect "no" on a price. It's their stuff.
  • Park considerately — these are residential streets.

Timing

Most McAllen garage sales run Friday through Sunday, with Saturday morning as the busiest window. Weather matters more here than in a lot of places — see our guide to beating the South Texas heat if you're shopping (or selling) June through September.
